TAKE 10!® Classroom Tips

How can I extend the TAKE 10!® Lesson?
Encourage students to set individual TAKE 10!® goals and to maintain a TAKE 10!® folder. All of the students should set a goal of 30-60 minutes of physical activity each day. Students can track their 10-minute activities in their folder as well. You may also encourage students to do some creative writing and to draw pictures related to TAKE 10!® and include them in their folder.

How should I use the student stickers?
At the end of the week, give students a sticker to wear home or to add to their TAKE 10!® folder. Either way, the stickers act as a motivator and a visual reminder to be more physically active.

When I do more than one TAKE 10!® lesson during the day, where on the poster do I place the sticker?
Place the additional stickers in the extra spaces to the right of the circles.

Can students lead TAKE 10!®?
Absolutely! Students tend to pay more attention and at times learn more from their peers. But remember, TAKE 10!® is also an opportunity for you to get up and be a healthy role model.

Some of my students are movement or rhythmically challenged, how can I help them learn simple movement patterns?
A simple way to address the movement challenges is to use verbal cues. These are descriptive terms that go along with the movement or activity. For example, you might describe a front kick as bounce and kick forward, or a grapevine step as step apart, step behind, step apart, touch. You could use a sports description such as, a vertical jump is similar to making a jumpshot in basketball. Initially, have the students repeat the verbal cues aloud as they move. The movement patterns will soon become easy for them to remember. Counting beats aloud or clapping also helps them move in rhythm.

How can I get new ideas for using the TAKE 10!® model?
Ask peer teachers and parents for suggestions or brainstorm during planning time. You can get the students to offer suggestions too. Either way, you will get new ideas for doing TAKE 10!® activities in the classroom. Remember a TAKE 10!® is any lesson that integrates ten minutes of physical activity with academic objectives.

How long should a TAKE 10!® lesson last?
A TAKE 10!® lesson should last 10 minutes, the cool-down 1 minute and the pencil and paper option no more than 5 minutes. Now that's a deal! A fun, integrated lesson that addresses multiple learning styles and can be done in less than 20 minutes.

How can I optimize the cool-down time?
While you or a student are leading the cool-down, pass out papers and describe the activity that will follow. You may also want to give reminders about upcoming events and opportunities at your school.
