Frequently Asked Questions about TAKE 10!®

How are the materials packaged?
The materials are grade specific, thus there is a different kit ($82 each) for each grade level (K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th).

Why do children need more physical activity?
Obesity rates among children and adolescents have doubled in the past 20 years with approximately 1 in 4 children considered overweight. Obese children are more likely to become obese adults and, as a result, are at increased risk of developing serious diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers. A key factor in obesity is energy imbalance - how many calories are expended in relation to the amount consumed. Children learn about the importance of physical activity and energy balance through the TAKE 10!® messages.

How is TAKE 10!®different from physical education class or recess?
The goal of TAKE 10!® is to reduce long periods of inactivity in the classroom. The program provides integrated lessons that not only promote physical activity, but also reinforce academic learning objectives.

How much time does this program require of teachers?
Teachers maybe asked to complete the program evaluations (included in each kit) by their principal.

Other than implementing the program, what other tasks will be asked of the teacher?
All participating classrooms receive TAKE 10!® Tracking Posters that teachers or students update with a sticker as activities are completed.

How will students benefit from the TAKE 10!® program?
In addition to getting much needed physical activity and having fun while learning, students have the opportunity to experience academic messages in ways that appeal to different learning styles.

Can the teachers make changes in the lessons to meet other objectives?
Absolutely! Teachers are encouraged to create their own TAKE 10!® lessons (using the lesson template in each kit) that reinforce daily learning objectives and find new ways to creatively incorporate physical activity into the school day.

How often should TAKE 10!® be implemented?
The physical activity recommendation for all children is 30-60 minutes of daily physical activity. We hope TAKE 10!® will be implemented at least once a day and more often if possible. By implementing TAKE 10!®, teachers can help students attain the recommended daily amount of exercise and develop healthy lifestyles.
